Varietex: The publishing house born from the silence of the uniform
It all started in 2019, with a story that should not be kept silent.
In the final months of 2019, as the world seemed to be heading in a different direction, Héctor Ortega , founder of Varietex, heard something that changed everything.
It wasn't a business talk.
It wasn't a planned conversation.
It was a testimony. Real. Raw. Deeply human.
A police officer recounted, without drama, a complex intervention he had experienced weeks earlier. He didn't speak to impress, nor to seek understanding. He spoke because he needed to unpack something that isn't taught in academies, that doesn't appear in reports or on the news.
Hector understood something immediately:
that story should not be lost.
Neither that one, nor those of so many other men and women who have served—and continue to serve—in security, healthcare, emergency services, and the armed forces.
It was at that moment that a clear, uncomfortable and urgent idea was born:
“What if we created a publishing house so these stories could exist and endure?”
A publisher that doesn't seek entertainment, but legacy.
A publishing house that does not narrate fiction, but rather experiences.
A publishing house that would transform the silence of public service into the written word.
From idea to reality: building from scratch amidst the noise
In 2020, with a global pandemic disrupting the world's priorities, Varietex quietly began.
While other sectors were halted, the project moved forward in an artisanal way.
Héctor Ortega , with no previous editorial experience but with vision and commitment, began to build:
-
He learned editing, layout and design from scratch
-
He designed covers and structured the first books
-
He wrote texts, sought testimonies, and established contact with the first authors
There was no budget, no team, no visibility.
Only one unshakeable conviction:
Every true story of service has value, and should be published with respect.
The first Spanish publisher of real testimonies from public service
Over time, Varietex has become what it is today:
a specialized, professional and culturally necessary publishing house.
We do not publish fiction.
We don't create made-up characters.
We do not publish self-help books or generic titles.
We publish real testimonials.
Told by their protagonists, or by those who have carefully recorded these experiences.
Stories that are born in:
-
An early morning shift on patrol
-
A 24-hour emergency room on call
-
A risky intervention in riots
-
An international mission with Armed Forces
-
A life-changing call in emergencies

-

-
New collections by emotional theme: fear, honor, vocation, companionship
-
Collaborations with academies, educational institutions and professional associations
Varietex does not want to be just a publishing house.
It wants to be a cultural reference.
An editorial space that builds a living memory of public service.
Why do we do this?
Because the uniform is not just worn, it is also lived.
And that life deserves to be told with respect, without sensationalism, without censorship.
Each Varietex book is a window.
A way to understand what happens behind a siren, a police report, a gown, a tactical backpack.
And above all: a way to dignify the service that so many people have silently provided.
Thank you for being here
To those who write, to those who read, to those who have served, and to those who value the truth:
Varietex belongs to you.
Not as a brand. As a cause.
This has only just begun.
And every book we publish is a way to continue writing the stories of those who, often, were not heard.
